Message from the CEO

When we began this journey, our mission was clear: to position Africa at the forefront of biomanufacturing. The Vaccine Access Initiative (VAI) was created to shift our continent from relying on imported health solutions to producing our own. We are building more than facilities — we are building self-reliance, dignity, and hope, ensuring our communities never have to wait in the global queue again.
By manufacturing vaccines and stem cell therapies locally, we ensure timely access to life-saving treatments while creating skilled jobs, attracting investment, and inspiring the next generation of African scientists. A healthier Africa is also a stronger, more self-sufficient Africa.
As an African scientist and leader, I believe that “Africa’s vaccine future must be built in Africa, by Africa, for Africa.“ Through collaboration and determination, we are turning this bold vision into reality. I call on policymakers, partners, and the public to join us in shaping Africa’s own future through innovation, resilience, and self-determination.

Prof. Dr. Alexzander Asea

Chief Executive Officer

The Journey Behind the Vision

Prof. Dr. Alexzander A. A. Asea, PhD, MBA, is a Ugandan-born biomedical scientist, entrepreneur, patent-holder, and global health leader whose career has bridged academic discovery, clinical translation, biotechnology commercialization, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. With over twenty-five years of executive management experience, his work spans GMP manufacturing, drug discovery, biologics, stem cell and gene therapy, clinical development, precision medicine, artificial intelligence, proteogenomics, and health systems innovation.

His academic and professional journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Chemistry from Makerere University, followed by a PhD in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and an MBA in Executive Management from the University of Toledo, USA. Over the course of his career, Prof. Asea has held senior leadership and scientific roles at leading institutions, including the Harvard Medical School, Boston University Medical School, Texas A&M University School of Medicine, University of Toledo College of Medicine, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Morehouse School of Medicine, King Fahd University Hospital, and several biotechnology and biopharmaceutical enterprises.

As CEO of Vaccine Access Initiative (VAi) and Head of R&D at Microhaem Scientifics (MHS), Prof. Asea is leading a bold national effort to position Uganda as a serious player in vaccine, stem cell, peptide, and biologics manufacturing. Under his leadership, VAi has advanced strategic technology-transfer partnerships for Hepatitis B, Oral Cholera Vaccine, Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine, and regenerative medicine platforms, while building capacity for local manufacturing and strengthening Uganda’s pathway toward health sovereignty.

Prof. Asea’s scientific record includes more than 300 scientific publications, one issued patent, five pending patent filings, over USD 50 million raised for research and commercial development, and more than 150 national and international speaking engagements. His publications reflect decades of work in immunology, heat shock proteins, stem cell therapeutics, natural killer cell biology, cancer, infectious diseases, precision medicine, and translational biomedical research.

At VAi, his journey now comes full circle: bringing decades of international scientific, clinical, and entrepreneurial experience back to Uganda to build local manufacturing capacity, reduce dependence on imported health technologies, and help secure Africa’s future in vaccines, biologics, and advanced therapeutics.
